  1. Thank you Maureen (and sorry if you get this message twice. Finger trouble at this end). The heron (AKA chicken!) did allow me to walk up to it (quite slowly) and so I could take the photograph. The herons here about are used to people walking in the forests and so if you approach slowly and quietly, they tolerate us. Was trying to get some more shots of the hawks (the Dutch call them buzzards) but they’ve been playing hide and seek with me today. We have quite a few kingfishers here about too but they scoot at the first sight of humans. Trying (without success) to get an image of a kingfisher (ijsvogel in Dutch (or ice bird) sitting on a branch with a fish in it’s beak. No luck so far. I’m not really cut out for wildlife photography!

  2. I think we would be drummed out of the Netherlands if we even thought about a BBQ including a heron! I’m sure they must be protected over here. Plenty of them around. There are many waterways running through most towns and roads and cycle paths quite often run alongside the canals and so the herons are not too afraid of humans. For days now I’ve been trying to get better photographs of the two hawks that live near to us but they’re fighting shy. Maybe they heard about my BBQ idea!
